Hospitalizations of confirmed COVID-19 patients in California
The number of confirmed patients in ICU and non-ICU settings began to climb in mid-June after California began to ease more of its shutdown restrictions. Here's the trend since the California Department of Public Health began releasing the data on April 1, 2020. As of , there are patients in ICUs, a change of from the day before, and non-ICU patients, a change of from the day before.

Note: Several rural counties do not have hospitals or ICU wards, so patients from those counties would go to neighboring counties for COVID-19 medical care. This includes Alpine, Sierra, Sutter and Trinity counties.

About the Data
On April 1, 2020, the California Department of Public Health released a dashboard breaking down statewide hospitalizations of positive COVID-19 patients.
We adjusted the numbers for a few counties that reported small anomalies, such as a negative patient count instead of zero.
The data used in the following graphics are pulled from the California Health and Human Services database on a daily basis. Any questions about the data can be sent to CalMatters' data journalist and web developer John D'Agostino.
Population data for each county is based on the 2018 American Community Survey.
Number of deaths due to COVID-19 comes from the California Department of Public Health.
Post-vaccination infection data comes from the California Department of Public Health.
